One of our favorite toys are magnetic tiles because they can be played with in so many different ways. They also have a lot of educational benefits.

Did you know you can write on magnet tiles with chalk markers and whiteboard markers?

You can write letters, numbers or sight words on the tiles for a variety of fun learning activities. ⁣ ⁣I noticed my four-year-old was having a hard time recognizing lower-case letters when he was playing a computer game so I set up a little lowercase/uppercase matching activity outside on the garage door to help practice that skill.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR LOWERCASE MAGNET TILE MATCH:

  • Magnetic tiles (We use Connetix and Magnatiles)
  • Chalk markers or dry erase markers
  • A magnetic surface

HOW TO DO THE LOWERCASE MAGNET TILE MATCH:

Write uppercase and lowercase letters on the square magnet tiles using chalk marker or dry erase markers. Depending on the number of tiles in your set you might need to pick and choose letters of the alphabet that have trickier matches. I color coordinated the pairs to make it a little easier.

Next find a magnetic surface like a refrigerator, metal door, cookie tray etc. We used our metal garage doors because we wanted to play outside and I wanted a large vertical surface for added midline crossing.

I put the uppercase letters on the door (placing some up high and some down low-for a little bit of added stretching/exercise) and I challenged him to pull the lowercase tiles one at a time to find their match.

MORE IDEAS

After the lowercase matching you can have your little ones arrange the letters in alphabetical order, spell their names with uppercase and lowercase letters or spell out sight words. Then of course they can use the tiles for free play. My son Teddy decided to build a Paw Patrol lookout tower with the rest of the tiles while his little sister attempted to destroy said look out tower. ⁣
